Spinal
Cord Injuries
Spinal cord injuries are usually caused by some type of trauma such
as a motor vehicle accident, diving accident or a serious fall.
Injuries
can range from a herniated disc (disc is pushed into the spinal
canal through a tear or rupture and presses on spinal nerves causing
severe pain), to paraplegia (paralysis in the lower extremities)
to quadriplegia (paralysis of both the upper and lower extremities).
Paralysis results from a break in the line of communication between
the brain and the muscles due to damage to the spinal cord. The
brain continues to send messages to the muscles, but because of
damage to the spinal cord, the messages cannot be received.
A
severe spinal cord injury can financially ruin a family. Expenses
for rehabilitation, rehabilitation devices, wheelchairs, ramps and
special transportation vehicles can be enormous.
If
you have suffered a spinal cord injury, you may wish to consult
an attorney who can properly investigate the circumstances surrounding
your accident. Even at first, if it appears to you that no one was
at fault for the accident, you would be well served to let an experienced
attorney make that decision. A thorough investigation may prove
otherwise and result in a substantial monetary recovery to help
pay the enormous costs involved in a spinal cord injury.
