Brain
Injuries
Each year in the United States, millions of people sustain head
and brain injuries. Of these, hundreds of thousands will experience
prolonged difficulties which will affect their ability to work and
function normally on a daily basis.
Frequent
causes of head injuries are motor vehicle accidents, falls, work
related accidents and sports related activities. A traumatic brain
injury results from damage to brain tissue caused by an external
force.
A
brain injury can be caused by a blow to the head or an injury where
the head does not strike an object, but the brain is subject to
a significant acceleration/deceleration motion such as whiplash.
Damage to brain tissue is usually caused by bruising, bleeding,
tearing and swelling. Loss of consciousness is not necessary for
there to have been a brain injury.
Traumatic
brain injury applies to open or closed head injuries resulting in
mild, moderate or severe impairments in one or more areas, including
cognition, language, memory, attention, reasoning, abstract thinking,
judgment, problem solving, sensory, perceptual and motor abilities,
psycho-social behavior, physical functions, information processing
and speech.
An
open head injury is one in which there is a penetrating wound to
the head causing an injury to the brain.
A
closed head injury is one in which there is no penetrating head
wound, but the soft tissue of the brain is forced into contact with
the hard bony inside of the skull causing an injury to the brain.
Often,
the effects of minor to moderate brain injuries are not immediately
apparent and therefore go undiagnosed. Also, it's not usual for
general imaging tests such as x-rays to be normal. The problem is
further compounded by the fact that there is often little, if any,
outward physical injury and the injured person looks quite healthy.
The
term minor or moderate brain injury is misleading because even a
minor brain injury can result in serious long term impairments.
